Information about Cookies

What are cookies?

A "cookie" is a small text file stored on the user's computer when he accesses a website, to provide information whenever the user re-visits the same site. It is a sort of reminder of the visited web page. Using the cookie, the web server sends information to the user's browser (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, etc.), stored on the latter's computer, and will be re-read and updated whenever the user reconnects to the site. In this way the Website can automatically adjust to the user. During browsing the user might receive on his computer different site cookies as well ("third-parties" cookies), directly setted by operators of those websites and used for the purposes and in accordance with the procedures defined by them.

Depending on their duration, cookies are divided into session cookies (those temporary stored and then automatically deleted from the computer at the end of the browsing session, by closing your browser) and persistent cookies (those remaining within the computer until they expire or are deleted by the user).

According to the functions and purposes, cookies can be subdivided into technical cookies and profiling cookies.

Technical cookies

Some cookies are used to perform computer authentications, session monitoring and memorization of specific information about users who access a web page. These cookies, so-called 'technical', are often useful in order to more easily browse an internet website and use all of its features. Technical cookies do not require user consent. This category also includes analytics cookies. These cookies "remember" what a user has done on the website and improve the functioning of it. For example, analytics cookies show what pages are most frequently visited, allow verifications of what are recurrent usage patterns of a website and help providers understand difficulties that the user faces during the use.

Profiling cookies

Other cookies can be used to monitor and create user profiles while browsing, study their movements and habits as they use the website or their consumption behaviour (what they buy, read, etc.), even for the purposes of sending advertisement of targeted and customised services. This is related to profiling cookies. These cookies require user prior consent under the terms of Art. 7 of EU Regulation 2016/679 and of existing national legislation.

Third-parties cookies

It can happen that a webpage contains cookies from other sites with several elements on the same page, such as banner adverts, images, videos, maps or specific links to web pages of other domains on servers other than that on which there is the requested page. In other words, these cookies are directly setted by website operators or different servers other than that website. We are now talking about so-called third-parties cookies, that are usually used for the purposes of profiling. The use of these cookies do requires user prior consent.
